World Cup Stadium Covered in Ceramic Tiles

At the opening game of the World Football Championship in Brazil, São Paolo's Arena Corinthians gleamed with its ceramic outer shell. High value was placed on sustainability for this new structure. The stadium, which was planned by Aníbal Coutinho, not only has the capacity for 68,000 spectators, it also has the largest video screen to be installed in a stadium. After the 2014 World Cup, the arena will be used as home stadium by the team Corinthians São Paolo. The stadium is known for its energy and water efficiency and the use of alternative energy sources. However, the façade also scores points for being environmentally friendly. The Greenguard-certified ceramic tiles consist purely of mineral raw materials and can be completely recycled. As the tiles are only five millimetres thick, they require less energy to manufacture and, during transport, take up less space than ordinary tiles. After the tiles had been produced in Spain, they were transported to Brazil in ten shipping containers. Approximately 4,000 TECHLAM ceramic tiles created by the company Levantina were used here. Altogether, the tiles manufactured for the stadium covered an area of 12,000 square metres.
