Coracle is a lounge chair made of wrapped and woven perforated leather that usually used in the automotive industry.
The British industrial designer Benjamin Hubert, created Coracle for the London-based furniture manufacturer De la Espada as part of a larger furniture collection.
The name Coracle refers to small boats, traditionally used in wales since the Bronze Age, and the woven construction found on the vessel that is reintroduced in the chair’s seating pattern.
Hubert’s intention was to make use of artisan craftsmanship, like for example of hand-stitching, in order to provide each piece of furniture with the unique quality only handmade objects can deliver.
By applying this handmade quality of the details to perforated leather, a material commonly used in the automotive industry, Huber manipulated and reinterpret the material’s use and generated a new industrial aesthetic.
The tri-weave is enhanced with the same perforated leather wrapped around the steel frame – a wrapping that is usually found on bike handles and which is making the chair more tactile and comfortable.
Magnetic cushions provide additional comfort while further enhancing the image of manipulated automotive industrial materials.
