Construction for the new art museum for the Michigan State University designed by Zaha Hadid is well under way – the opening is scheduled for spring 2012.The London-based office of Zaha Hadid is responsible for the design of the new Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum for the Michigan State University: Sited at the northern edge of the East Lansing, Michigan, campus with a plaza to the west and a sculpture garden to the east the new 46,000-square-foot art museum at Michigan State University will contain the university’s collection of modern art.
The architects’ intention “approach architecture and landscape as interacting with each other” is reflected in a building form that is determined by the landscape lines of the site. The building reaches 40 feet at its highest point and blends into the landscape at 27 feet height.
Patches of pleated stainless steel fins clad the structure that create solid walls in some areas and in others they are installed over glazing and serve as sunshades to limit glare.
The art collection is displayed on three levels of open galleries that are complemented by education spaces. All of these spaces are oriented to a black metal stair and exposed concrete walls that define circulation paths.
