An Incredibly Creative Time: Philippe Baumann, CEO and Proprietor of Création Baumann

The 1960s were characterized by stylistic juxtapositions ranging from the functional to the opulent. At the same time, they offered the possibility for a complete rediscovery and new experience of what is needed in interior design. A retrospective and outlook with Philippe Baumann, CEO and proprietor of Création Baumann from the Swiss city of Langenthal.

What is the legacy of 1960s architecture?
The 1960s were an incredibly creative time and an era of great leaps in development with respect to science and technology. The first man walked on the moon, the Beatles and the Rolling Stones were staging a revolution in the world of music, and many people were fulfilling the dream of owning their own homes. The 60s saw the birth of Pop Art and were the era of renowned interior designers such as Eero Aarnio, Arne Jacobsen, Verner Panton and, of course, Charles Eames. Along with these masters of design and movements, to me the 1960s are characterized above all by their many stylistic juxtapositions and the possibility to make new discoveries and experiences. Just think of the functional simplicity of muted colours and timeless elegance alongside the expressive colours, opulent patterns and graphic prints that appeared not only on wallpaper, but on cushion covers, curtains and other textiles as well.

Where do you see architecture 60 years from now?
More and more people are living in cities, where climate change is heating things up and particulates are polluting the air. In 60 years, architecture will more than ever face the challenge of responding to climate change, for instance with planted buildings or energy-efficient construction methods, and of finding solutions for overcrowded cities where high-quality living space is needed in the smallest areas. In the area of interior design, high-tech fabrics will play a central role and will fulfil more than one function, for example by reducing heat radiation and thus improving the indoor atmosphere. As manufacturers, we are taking on the challenges of our time and looking for answers that will enable long-lasting, sustainable production.

When did you first encounter Detail?
My father, who was my predecessor in the company, often used to do his “pleasant work” in front of the TV after supper. This work included reading magazines like Detail. He subtly gave his sons a look into his world of architecture and interior design. Obviously, this had an effect on me.

Philippe Baumann studied economics at the University of St. Gallen and textile technology at the Wattwill Textile School. He experienced several years of professional practice in Geneva, Milan and New York with companies such as Donghia, an internationally active producer of furniture and fabrics. In 1997, he joined his family enterprise, Création Baumann of Langenthal, with a focus on operations and visiting every sales region in the USA. In 2000, Philippe Baumann became CEO and proprietor of Création Baumann.
