Anthropomorphic vision: Shenzhen-Hong Kong International Center by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture

Set between the foothills of the Longcheng Park and Dayun National Park, Shenzhen-Hong Kong International Center by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture comes with anthropomorphic curves on its facade. The 700-metre-high building, which will be China's tallest once it is completed, has been designed in connection with the Shimao Shenzhen Longgang masterplan, which anchors the surrounding cultural and retail areas in a dynamic space.

The main concern in designing Shenzhen-Hong Kong International Center was to achieve compliance with the LEED rating system for environmentally sustainable construction. Accordingly high-performance glass is to be used to reduce heat gain, while open spaces in the building will capture the north wind for natural ventilation. Public transport will be handled at an extensive transit centre complete with a bus terminal.

As Shenzhen is known for heavy downpours and flooding, water resources management also played a significant role in the planning of the complex. To counter abundant precipitation and enable rainwater reuse and thus save on resources, adjacent landscape elements incorporate synthetic soils, retention ponds and a network of plants and foliage.
