Fluffy and artful - the Domotex highlights

At »Domotex«, the annual trade fair for carpets and floor coverings in Hanover, a number of style trends for the coming months were clearly visible. The main material for 2016 will undoubtedly be cork. Designers and architects are once again discovering this natural raw material and experimenting with colour, surface and appearance. Amorim, for example, which specializes in the production of cork floors, showed how they are once again practical, having given them a modern slant. The material is already being featured on various interior blogs and at designer shows.

Like last year, the Scandinavian design trend with its clear shapes and use of natural materials remains strong. Kährs focused on presenting Scandinavian floors and attempted to establish clear connections to the respective country, as with the birch floor from Finland, laid in large squares. In particular, bright floors made of traditional furniture wood such as oak or ash are in demand. The trend towards white parquet, which achieves the desired effect with a corresponding varnish, is ongoing.

Some parquet manufacturers are become increasingly artistic with respect to design to distinguish themselves from the wide range of nature-imitating floorings. »Bisque« by Listone Giordano, which resembles a herringbone pattern but with a new look thanks to a modern twist, is particularly artistic.

In addition to adapting traditional patterns, companies followed the current interior-design trend with graphic patterns. One particular feature of floors with rough surfaces as offered by Mafi is slip-resistance in wet rooms. Kährs have transformed the formerly conservative herringbone pattern into a chevron pattern and are introducing again into German homes.

When it comes to carpets, high-pile carpets continue to be popular. Whereas a few years ago »shadowing« - shadows and patterns on high-pile carpets caused by use - was frowned upon, now it is in demand. Generally noticeable was the fact that many manufacturers had opted for large motifs for their carpets. Also represented were high-tech materials such as Tisca's silver ions, woven into the carpet fibre and said to be bacteria- and odour-resistant, as well as raw natural silk.

The colour spectrum was clearly delineated this year: In addition to the Pantone colours for 2016 - pink and light blue - and natural colours, also present in the collections were grass-green, mustard-yellow, grey, petrol and decked blue.
