Green railway tracks: Design by LAVA and Aspect Studios comes first in Central Park competition

LAVA and Aspect Studios have won the international competition to transform the existing 16-hectare Central Park in Ho Chi Minh City. Their masterplan presents a number of urban layers that offer a mix of informal and public spaces.
To counteract the park's existing rigid grid form, LAVA and Aspect Studios have concentrated on creating slightly elevated winding footpaths that trace the railway tracks – installed by the French in the 19th century – that once ran through the site. Recreation spaces in the form of sunken gardens connect to a subterranean shopping area that forms part of the new Ben Thanh metro station. The park's organically shaped sculpture garden is articulated by artificial plants that will harvest rainwater, cool the area and store energy in solar modules.
The metaphorical railway tracks recall that Ben Thanh was once Southeast Asia's first train station and is to become Vietnam's first metro station in the near future. As LAVA director Chris Bosse points out, the new design for Central Park refers to the site's past urban fabric and future mobility in the country.
