Daycare Centre in the Upper Palatinate by Berschneider + Berschneider

The architects of the St. Anton Daycare Centre in Freiystadt-Möning, Upper Palatinate opted for renewable resources and use of an energy-efficient heat pump for heating purposes.

The single-storey complex in the rural suburb of Freiystadt accommodates 74 children altogether, divided into two crèche groups for twelve children each and two kindergarten groups for 25 children each, spread over two of the building's four wings. The third wing houses staff and administration rooms, while the wide central section contains a multi-purpose room and a joint canteen that opens onto a covered terrace.
With the exception of the white window frames, the newbuild presents itself almost entirely in grey on the outside; larch wood clads the facades, which transition seamlessly into the metal sheet standing seam roofing without visible eaves. Rooms up to 6 m in height are to be found inside due to the single-story design, and in this way it was also possible to keep the entire building barrier-free.

Large areas of glazing and window benches in the group rooms create a direct connection again and again to the outdoors, and plenty of natural light is admitted through large roof lights above the group rooms.

For the interior finishing work, the architects mainly made use of white stained spruce, sunflower-yellow rubber flooring and acoustic ceilings lined in wood wool lightweight boards. Leaf-shaped peephole-style windows create an occasional connection between the individual sections.

Behind the scenes, a heat pump and underfloor heating provide the building the necessary warmth. The daycare centre was designed in the form of a solid timber structure and has been provided wood-fibre thermal insulation.
