Art Campus on Three Blocks by SO-IL

The north side of Brooklyn is currently undergoing transformation from an industrial area into a residential district. SO-IL's Amant, an Art Campus, where art is created and displayed, is providing an impulse for this shift.

In 2019, art collector Lonti Ebers established the non-profit art organization Amant, which supports artists by enabling them to work and experiment unencumbered by financial pressures. To this end, the organization provides free temporary accommodations and studio spaces.

However, the Amant also encompasses other functions such as galleries, offices, storage rooms, an event hall and a bookshop with a café.

These different functions are distributed over two blocks separated by a road. A meat wholesaler, a truck-repair shop, a couple of sound studios and a restaurant supplier can be found in the immediate vicinity. The original plan to join all the spaces in a single structure was not possible due to the division into two blocks.

Instead, the architects designed four buildings that stand in a loose arrangement. While their heights are in keeping with the rest of the neighbourhood, they differ greatly in terms of materials, size and proportion. For instance, some of the façades are of smooth exposed concrete; others are of profiled brick. Facing the street, the facades appear closed. But when visitors step onto the campus, two interior courtyards open up: these are reminiscent of Japanese gardens and invite guests to linger. Public paths and many entrances interconnect the small art campus with the neighbourhood and encourage residents and visitors alike to take a closer look at the campus and the art exhibited there.
