School in Brugg, Switzerland

The long exposed-concrete façade of the school forms a calm visual contrast to the nearby forest. On the opposite face is a single-storey tract with a glazed façade. The flat roof of this tract is used as a recreational area and continues into the glazed entrance zone at the same level. The over 100-metre-long double-skin concrete wall was designed without expansion joints. To avoid cracking, two 2 m wide “shrinkage lanes” were formed over the full height. They were left open for two months and then filled with insitu concrete with a low water-cement ratio and with special shrinkage reinforcement. This form of construction meant that stabilizing, load-bearing internal walls were not necessary, thus allowing a greater flexibility in the layout.
