Truly massive, monolithic buildings are becoming something of an object of the past; heat insulation and energy saving regulations have long ensured that multi-layered, insulated wall constructions are now the norm. From the outside, however, these facades do not necessarily appear any less monolithic, as the examples in the next edition demonstrate. The range of materials used covers a broad spectrum, from exposed concrete and brickwork, to thermal insulation composite systems or natural stone.

The research and development centre of a breakfast cereal manufacturer is the first building in Switzerland to have been awarded Platinum Certification in the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) rating system developed in America. The materials used to heat the new building, which is being built by a member of the Nestl� Group, include waste from coffee roasting.

Sarpi border checkpoint in Georgia

Designed by J. MAYER H. architects the customs checkpoint is situated at the Georgian border to Turkey, at the shore of the Black Sea. With its cantilevering terraces, the tower is used as a viewing platform, with multiple levels overlooking the water and the steep part of the coastline.
