Am 12. Juni 1215 hat König Johann Ohneland in Runnymede nach einem Aufstand der Barone in Runnymede die Magna Carta unterzeichnet und damit das Fundament für den heutigen Rechtsstaat gelegt. »Writ in Water«, ein öffentliches Kunstwerk von Mark Wallinger und Studio Octopi, ehrt das über 800 Jahre alte Vermächtnis der Ur-Verfassung.
Mark Wallinger konzipierte »Writ in Water« als immersiven Raum zum Nachdenken. Dort, wo Wasser, Himmel und Licht aufeinandertreffen, lädt das Kunstwerk Besucher ein, über die schriftliche Grundlegung demokratischer Prinzipien zu reflektieren. Der Eingang führt die Besucher durch ein kreisförmiges Labyrinth in die zentrale Kammer. Über dem Wasserbecken erstrahlt der Himmel wie ein Spiegelbild durch das offene Dach.
Die Innenseite des Wasserbeckens ist mit dem berühmten Artikel 39, der das heutige Prozessrecht begründet, invertiert beschriftet, sodass der Schriftzug erst durch die Reflektion im Wasser lesbar wird – als wäre der Text im Wasser geschrieben. »Whether the words are ephemeral or everlasting is up to us«, so Wallinger, der mit seinen Worten auch auf die Tatsache anspielt, dass Großbritannien bis heute keine schriftlich verankerte Verfassung hat.
