Ceramic Facade in New York City

Located in New York’s banking and business hub of downtown Manhattan is the up-and-coming Tribeca neighbourhood. One of the newest projects in this former industrial district is 91 Leonard, located on Broadway. The 19-storey building with a total area of 16,500 m² was designed by the New York architectural firm SOM, with Hill West Architects responsible for the implementation planning. The new building has an orthogonally divided and finely structured facade. It is thus reminiscent of the neighbouring old warehouse buildings and lofts with their brick and natural stone facades. The double windows, regularly placed in the elevations, are framed by an attached grid structure of ceramic rectangular tubes from the KeraShape system by Agrob Buchtal. The surfaces between this grid structure and the recessed window openings with bronze-coloured reveal frames consist of ceramic tiles from the KeraTwin K20 system. The tiles have been specially profiled in the cross-section so that their raised stripes correspond with the face width of the rectangular tubes, in line with the architects’ specifications.
