LED Lighting for the Peace Altar in Rome

Built around the Altar of Augustan Peace, the Museo dell’Ara Pacis in Rome by Richard Meier & Partners dating from 2006 is now illuminated by new lighting. The existing lighting concept of Fisher Marantz Stone from New York was converted from halogen to LED and realised with spotlights and floodlights from Erco. The lighting scenery highlights the monument, which was inaugurated in the 9th century B.C., and the museum exhibits. According to the manufacturer it now consumes 85 % less energy. The concept includes general illumination with a warm white light colour that defines the space around the peace altar made of Carrara marble. The altar in turn is sculpturally highlighted using accentuated illumination with a neutral-white light colour. The lighting design also takes into account the changing daylight that enters through the glass facade. The Erco Lightcast recessed ceiling luminaires, Parscan spotlights and floodlights and Opton spotlights were used inside the building.
