Our Favourites: Three inviting gastronomies with a historical flair

These gastronomic uses set the scene in a new light: A bar in the Sint-John Cathedral in Antwerp, the bar La Ruina in an old textile factory in Hermosillo in Mexico and the "Naked Bar" in the old walls of a corner house in the capital of Slovenia.

Beer and confessional: Bar in Antwerp Cathedral

Along with the usual altars and confessionals, the Cathedral of Our Lady in Antwerp in its Chapel of St. John now has a bar for taking an ecclesiastical coffee break. Van Staeyen Interior Architects has designed the small bar for thirsty churchgoers, tourists and the city's residents in the form of a square wooden structure that with its contemporary interpretations of Gothic elements merges in perfectly with the ecclesiastic surroundings.

The bar La Ruina by Tamen Arquitectura occupies the stone remains of a former textile factory.

The Naked Bar: Refurbishment by dekleva gregorič architects

Instead of giving the architect a list of requirements for this project, the head chef invited them to a brunch comprising several courses. This is where he introduced the future menu of Bistro EK. This was helpful not only in understanding the complex processes that take place during preparation of a brunch. Moreover, the renovation found its conceptual model in the dishes that were presented.
