Balanced books: Community Library in La Molina by Gonzalez Moix Arquitectura

Gonzalez Moix Arquitectura took the idea of seated readers as the starting point for its design of the Community Library, which is located in a residential neighbourhood of the La Molina district of Lima, Peru. To enable the best-possible views of the surroundings, which include an adjacent park, the architects also tried to capture daylight in optimum manner.
The interior of the longitudinal building is divided up by columns in exposed concrete, set at a distance that corresponds to the width of the tables, and thus not only introduces an exterior design feature to the inside but also continues an interior design feature outside. The regular positioning of the columns on the façade is somewhat reminiscent of a row of books, disrupted however by two columns leaning to one side to signalise the library entrance, as the architects explain. Two cubes clad in indigenous wood form the ends of the building, lending it a warm feel.
The Community Library in La Molina was completed after an eight-year design and construction period involving a continual consultation process with the municipality and its inhabitants. This municipal exchange is to continue even now that the library has opened.
