Based in Antwerp and founded in 2011 by Dirk Somers, Bovenbouw Architectuur currently employs 18 architects from across Europe. Somers, Head of Design, leads the office and also teaches as a guest professor at Ghent University and Delft University of Technology. The practice describes its approach as timeless – it does not reject the notion of “style” but seeks to develop a distinct formal language for each project context. One example is the conversion of the Royale Belge building in Brussels, realised in collaboration with Caruso St John Architects and DDS+. The work of Bovenbouw has been exhibited widely, notably in 2021, when the office curated the exhibition “Composite Presence” in the Belgian Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale.
Following its renovation, the former administrative building on the outskirts of Brussels now offers space for a hotel and other uses. The appearance of the new glass facades largely corresponds to the original design from the late 1960s.
Architects from Flanders are currently causing international ripples with their unconventional and creative conversions of existing buildings. The new book from Edition Detail's Baukultur series portrays the amazingly lively Flemish conversion culture with 24 recent courageous and pragmatic project examples.
