As the year draws to a close, we present the highlights chosen by our readers: among the most clicked online articles of 2025 are two single-family homes in Switzerland and a holiday home in De Hoge Veluwe National Park in the Netherlands.
In Winterthur, Lorenz Bachmann is transforming a 1920s residential building into a spacious, modern home for a family of four. A special feature of the house is the transparent roof extension, which breaks up the small-scale floor plan and creates a spacious, open room for the family as a flexible retreat. The wraparound glazing opens up the new attic space to the surroundings and offers sweeping views over rooftops and green hillsides. The transformation combines old and new: the roof rests on the ridge purlin of the existing structure and on two newly added eaves purlins. Read more

The small pavilion-like holiday home designed by JCR Architecten is almost invisible in the natural surroundings of the Dutch national park De Hoge Veluwe. Only the surrounding glass façade and the pent roof of the partially buried structure stand out on the former military site. Raw in-situ concrete, Douglas fir wood and birch plywood characterise the interior, which opens up to the landscape via the three-sided glass front. Read more

CRRA is designing a three-part, barrier-free house made of prefabricated wooden elements for a family of five. The architects are avoiding the use of concrete: instead of a traditional floor slab, the house rests on steel supports that are anchored in the ground with screw foundations. This means that soil sealing and the loss of vegetation area are virtually zero. Water can continue to drain away unhindered and the house can be removed without leaving any residue if necessary – a forward-looking model for sustainable living in green surroundings. Read more
