Reception Building for the Vintgar Gorge by Ofis Arhitekti

The 1,600 m long gorge is formed by the Radovna River and was largely inaccessible until 1891. Formed by glaciers during the last ice age, it was largely inaccessible until 1891. However, in recent years, the number of visitors has risen sharply. To protect the sensitive landscape near the town of Bled, the local tourism association has adopted a sustainable management approach. Visitor numbers have been limited, and a digital ticketing system has been introduced. At the heart of this reorganisation is the new entrance building designed by Ofis Arhitekti, which replaces a wooden hut dating from the 1980s.

The new entrance building designed by Ofis is compact and takes on the proportions of its predecessor. The project team transformed the original structure into a contemporary wooden building spanning 42 m². The focus was on preserving the natural landscape, which is home to numerous animal species and over 600 plant species. At the same time, the aim was to create an inviting and functional entrance. While the river-facing side of the building is transparent, the other side is largely closed except for an opening for the kiosk. Visitors enter through the glazed section, which provides a view of the Radovna River, creating a direct connection to the landscape. The interior layout is clearly structured, separating groups and guests with online tickets from visitors who have to wait due to capacity restrictions.

In terms of construction, the design relies on regional resources and a consistent, sustainable approach to materials. The new wooden facade encloses the preserved core areas of the old structure, and the solid brickwork base has been fully retained. All new materials comply with current ecological standards. Glue-free wood panels were used for the exterior walls. The supporting structure is made of spruce wood and is free of glue and chemical additives. The frames of the triple-glazed windows are also made of spruce wood. Both the facade cladding and the roof shingles are made of carbonised wood treated with natural pine resin. This treatment protects against moisture, inhibits fungal growth and deters insects. Depending on how it is cared for, the wood will either remain dark or lighten to brown or grey tones over time. Inside, natural, oiled larch creates a warm atmosphere. Drawing inspiration from alpine hay barns, the design features striking vertical wooden supports that structure the space and integrate sales and presentation elements. All the wood comes from Slovenian production.

The architecture is understated, reduced to the essentials. The building's surroundings were designed with minimal intervention. The pathways and terrain modelling are based on the existing landscape. It was crucial to minimise the impact of the large number of visitors on the sensitive natural environment.
