HEMAA Builds Children's and Sports Centre from Rammed Earth and Timber

HEMAA Architectes has constructed a children's and sports centre at Parc des Loges, to the east of Paris. The deliberate use of natural building materials creates a harmonious balance between nature, functionality, and materiality. The centre works in close synergy with nature, and is located at Parc des Loges, east of Paris. A primary school, nursery and crèche are combined with a sports centre in a single building. Traditional, sustainable materials were used in the construction to create a harmonious balance between nature, functionality and materials.

The layout of the buildings in the children's and sports centre follows the natural slope of the land and blends in gently with the existing topography and landscape, without resorting to artificial interventions. The topography shapes both the path system and the relationship with the open landscape and public urban space. To the south, there is a smooth transition to the neighbouring park and, to the east, to the Jules Ferry Promenade. In this way, the landscape is closely linked to the place of learning. The educational concept of the forest kindergarten philosophy, which promotes learning through free play, movement, and sensory experiences in the natural environment, served as a source of inspiration. The integrated courtyard is designed as an open space surrounded by oak, ash, maple and elm trees. 

The project meets the requirements of the environmental concept with its facade made of load-bearing rammed earth and wooden supporting structure. It is an example of sustainable and responsible architecture. Material excavated during the construction of the Grand Paris Metro was reused for the rammed earth walls. The walls are insulated with hemp wool to preserve the breathability and diffusive openness of the building envelope. The base area is made of low-carbon, textured concrete to ensure the building's longevity. Green roofs improve thermal comfort and support natural water management. Overhanging eaves and adjustable sun protection elements also regulate the amount of light entering the building. The building complex is also designed to optimise winter lighting and provide natural summer ventilation. The combination of natural materials, such as wood and clay, creates a soft architectural atmosphere, conveying a sense of calm and security.

The children's centre is complemented by an additional structure that extends the existing stadium complex. The sports centre's orientation allows for an optimal view from the inner courtyard, and the roof slopes down towards the leisure area to ensure good natural lighting. The sports centre also reinforces the concept of communal, intergenerational, open spaces in an urban context, contributing to the neighbourhood's revitalisation.
