The new daycare centre in the Slovenian municipality of Bohinjska Bistrica blends naturally into the landscape as if it had always been there. Its low-pitched gable roofs and wooden roof structures are reminiscent of traditional Slovenian farmhouses and barns.

An ensemble of three buildings
The three clearly defined volumes respond to the urban planning situation, a collaboration between the Slovenian studio Arrea and the Spanish practice KAL A. They also achieve a clear functional structure that makes it easy to find your way around.

Building organisation
Two elongated wings form a small inner courtyard with a more compact building. The west wing houses all the main functions and the group rooms for three- to six-year-olds. The second wing, on the east side, accommodates the group rooms for younger children. The third, smallest building comprises a multi-purpose room.

Flowing spaces
Wide corridors lead to the group rooms, which are arranged in a linear fashion. These rooms are connected by doors, creating a flexible, flowing space with many views. The sanitary facilities are unusually decentralised between the group rooms and can be accessed directly from them.

Conceptually, the outdoor spaces play an important role. Large roof overhangs provide sheltered outdoor areas that can be accessed directly from the group rooms. Floor-to-ceiling sliding windows create a seamless connection between the inside and outside spaces.
