Light from a single component

Lighting technology is often considered in an additive way, with components such as lenses, louvers and anti-glare shields. Somnĭum by Artemide takes a different approach. The system reduces the optical unit to a 30 × 30 mm cell, combining the lens and anti-glare shield into a single component made from a single material. The louvre is not an additional component, but is integrated into the housing. 

The optical effect arises from the geometry itself. The anti-glare shield covers the lens and integrates its brightness into the system via reflection and refraction. Somnĭum thus achieves a UGR value of less than 16 through the coordination of the elements, rather than additional shielding. This reduces the number of components, as well as the assembly and manufacturing steps.

The cell can be developed into a modular lighting system comprising linear and curved segments. Direct and indirect light components can be combined within the continuous profile. Electromechanical joints integrated into the profile allow open or closed configurations. This enables the system to adapt to different spaces in offices and commercial buildings without any additional connecting elements being exposed. 

The structural logic is particularly relevant to the design process. Rather than separating technology and appearance, Somnĭum develops both from a shared structure. This approach reduces material usage and weight, while enabling precise positioning of the light within the space. NG
