Sports Centre in Fließ by AllesWirdGut

Deeply cantilevered over a slope, the football club building in exposed concrete is not only visible from afar but itself offers all-round views of the Alpine landscape from its panorama terrace. Its design – part of a major project realised by AllesWirdGut Architects with and for the people of the village of Fließ – is explained by the local topography, with the 3000-inhabitant municipality being located on a plateau some 200 m above the river Inn near Landeck. Its previous sports field was down at the river and could only be reached by car or bus.

Conversely, the 3 ha Kalvari sports centre is situated on a slope just over a kilometre from the centre of the village, where between 2001 and 2007 AllesWirdGut erected a building for a tourist information office, café, a multi-purpose hall and exhibition space.  Winning the respective competition is what actually gave rise to the office’s foundation in the first place.
A prerequisite for the sports facilities, comprising a football pitch and one in artificial turf, a swimming pool, basketball court, boulder wall, track and field areas and so on, was that earthmoving was to be minimized as far as possible despite the sloping site. The architects therefore worked with floating floor levels for the building for Fließ football club, the main user of the site.

A long concrete walkway integrating a running track and a long jump pit connects the panorama restaurant on the first floor with the grandstand, beneath which parking for visitors is located. A deeply cantilevered pergola in exposed concrete rounds off the building, making it a dominant urban structure in the meadow landscape. At the lower level the clubhouse accommodates changing rooms and showers for the teams and the referee.  Storage rooms have been erected at the site for the village’s other clubs. Altogether the local sports clubs invested over 15 000 hours of volunteer work into realization of what is a gigantic project for the village.
