SUMA arquitectura

The Gabriel García Márquez Library in Barcelona is the most widely recognised project to date by Suma, the Madrid-based architecture studio founded in 2006 by Guillermo Sevillano and Elena Orte. In 2024, the building was honoured with the Mies van der Rohe Award in the Emerging Architect category. The seven-person practice focuses on distinctive residential buildings and public-sector architecture, and is known for its sustainable, multidisciplinary approach. Orte and Sevillano both studied at the Polytechnic University of Madrid and Columbia University in New York, and are regarded as pioneers of solid timber construction in Spain. Beyond their built work, theory plays an important role in the studio’s ethos, pursued through Musa, a small in-house research lab. Other notable projects by Suma include the Playtime Apartments (2015) and the Our-Shelves House (2021), both in Madrid.
