Favourite Timber Buildings

At the end of the year, we present three timber buildings that have convinced our editorial team in every respect.
The founders of the Studio Noun architecture office, Hendrik Steinigeweg and Philipp Schaefle, were driven not only by the ambitious aim of erecting the house in a scattered settlement in eastern Switzerland, but also by the desire to build the house completely of wood using as little glue as possible. Apart from the large gable roof, which is covered with fibre-cement panels and colour-coordinated with the Alpine backdrop, they have achieved their objectives both in the load-bearing, solid-wood elements as well as the interior work.

As part of a tourist resort in the Pearl River Delta, Luo Studio continue historical Chinese wood-building traditions in the form of this footbridge.

Modular, recyclable and flexible – the wooden skeleton framework by Nieuwe Architecten in the Dutch city of ’s-Hertogenbosch demonstrates many qualities that are vital to operating a modern postsecondary institution. This structure functions as the entrance building to Koning Willem I College and will give the college complex, previously surrounded by large parking lots, more visibility on the main road.
