Arkitema Designs a Visionary School in Denmark

According to the architects from Arkitema, Erlev is the first wood-built school of the new generation. The sustainable material unites construction and design to create a future-oriented learning environment. Situated in the Danish city of Haderslev, the educational building offers space for 500 pupils over its 5800 m². In order to create the best possible environment for the school’s young users, the floor plans were designed in close collaboration between the teaching staff and planning team. The result is a low ensemble that develops on the horizontal plane and comprises several volumes.

The Erlev Skole consists almost entirely of cross-laminated timber. The supporting structure is based on a grid frame that subdivides the entire ensemble into square modules. In turn, the distribution of the interior spaces is based on these units, which alternately form joined, larger communal areas or more intimate zones.

An open learnscape represents the heart of the school. It presents itself as a two-storey hall; its platforms, niches and seating corners invite pupils to read, relax or dine. From here, a central stairway leads to the library on the upper level.

The individual age groups are organized from kindergarten to sixth form as pavilion-like clusters around the main building. These clusters are arranged around the shared corridor and fit perfectly with the pedagogical concept of the school. Instead of conventional classrooms and frontal teaching, this school values the active transmission of knowledge.

The dynamic group areas convey a love of innovation, creativity and curiosity. Daylight streams deeply into every wing through large skylights and, in combination with wood fittings and functional linoleum flooring, ensures a pleasant, child-friendly atmosphere.
