In the suburbs of Bucharest, architect Stefan Pavaluta and his team at Vinklu have built a café on a narrow plot of land that, with its pointed gable shape, could also pass for a chapel.

Designed by the architectural practice Ten, the house accommodates five women near Gradačac in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It offers women who have survived war, violence and exclusion a safe place to live. The project combines architecture with social engagement, promoting communal living and participation in rural areas.

Lorcan O'Herlihy Architects (LOHA) built the Isla Intersections project in one of the city's most inhospitable areas. This social housing development uses modular prefabrication to create an almost village-like atmosphere.

Recycled concrete meets regional building culture

Designed by Schlicht Lamprecht Kern Architekten, the community centre combines structural and social sustainability. Two new buildings made of wood and recycled concrete have been added to the two existing buildings to create a meeting place.

The building complex in the centre of Frederiksberg, near Copenhagen, offers space for 677 student flats and micro-apartments. The building's accordion-like street facade is particularly striking. On the ground floor, residents have access to a number of communal areas.
