For the third year in a row the London Design Festival 2011 is taking place at the Victoria and Albert Museum and Sackler Centre.
On display until September 25 are various installations and a broad program of more than 280 special events, talks and workshops across 25 design disciplines. The first one you see is
Timber Wave, created by AL_A architects and engineering firm Arup. The intention of the architects is bring the Victoria and Albert Museum out onto the street by transforming its Cromwell Road Entrance
with the installation of a giant timber wave cascading down the steps.
Timber Wave is a three-dimensional latticework spiral is built from oil-treated American red oak. It is a structure of 12 meters in diameter and three-storeys in height high that employs construction techniques and materials normally used in furniture.
Another unique installation is for example Textile Field by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec in collaboration with Danish textile manufacturer Kvadrat is on display at the museum’s Gallery 48a, called Raphael Court .
Textile Field is an lounge-like installation made of colored textiles and foam. Visitors are invited to rest on this expansive sensual field within Raphael Court, and to contemplate the surrounding seven enormous works by Italian painter Raphael from a new, uninhibited perspective.
Next to several other installations and there is the exhibition
Brutal Simplicity of Thought: How It Changed the World by M&C Saatchi at the Sackler Centre, Level 1, showing concepts that have changed the world - from God to the regular paper clip.
This exhibition celebrates, in words and pictures, moments when the concept of M&C Saatchi's
Brutal Simplicity of Thought was applied and showed that nothing is impossible. In short it aims to make the visitor see everything afresh - the distillation of the Saatchi approach.
